    The mere fact that US could churn out 75+ 'good enough' carriers/conversions in 4 years _during the biggest wqr in history_ just proves what we can do when necessary. The most complicated ships, and we build them like it's no effort.

    California was even more susceptible to torpedo attack, because she her watertight hatches were not secured due to an inspection scheduled for Monday December 8. Her crew did not have enough time to set material condition Zebra to control the progressive flooding from the torpedoes.

      Navy airplane designations included the manufacturer, that's why it changed from the "4"th "Grumman" fighter to the "2"nd "General Motors" fighter. This all changed around 1962 or so, and you can see it in the Phantom II changing from the "F4H" (I think) to the F-4.

    I heard that after the blast and fires, several hands who were blown off or jumped overboard to avoid burning alive, and rescued by other ships, were written up for Desertion or Unauthorized Absence by the Franklin's hard nose Skipper.

  • @HootOwl513
    @HootOwl513 23 дні тому

    Another famous squadron on the Franklin at the time she was kamakazied was VMF-214, ''Pappy'' Boyington's Black Sheep, with a contingent of F4Us. Boyington was in a POW camp by then. Another Nose Art Violation was the depiction of Boyington's F4U-1A, Buno 17833. ''833'' was correct, but Pappy had a habit of taking whatever aircraft was just back from the mechanics' line -- often getting a lemon -- which he could bring back down better than the ''College Boys'' who had fewer hours in that tricky bird. Corsair 833 was thus rolled out and dolled up for a PR photo shoot, with 24 Japanese flags stencilled on the fuselage side, and the script ''Lulu-Belle'' [his current GF] gracing the port side. This image has been the delight of modelers everywhere for over a half century. In reality, once the press corps got back on their R4D for the Rear, the fuselage was wiped down with solvent, because the Marine Corps believed even kill markings compromised camouflage and operational security.

    Love the video, being from North Carolina, I grew up visiting the Showboat in summers, evening getting the honor of meeting the surviving crew including the year they invited the surviving crew of the I-19 one year to return part of the torpedo that hit the North Carolina. Or thing I remember is that they used to have a nightly light and sound show during the summer that told the story of the North Carolina's history during World War II, unfortunately it had been discontinued years ago. Also, thanks for mentioning the Stryker's Bridge, that was something that I learned from the crew how to tell her apart from her sister.
